Melanie’s Get Examined by Roc
Melanie’s is a Caribbean restaurant on Fulton St. and Nostrand Ave. I noticed sometime ago they expanded and have thought about paying them a visit.
Curry Goat with Spinach Rice, Okra and Macaronie Pie, by Mireille Roc
Couple of days ago I stumped upon this review of Melanie’s by Mireille Roc, who gave it a one star review.
“At first glance, I had very high hopes. A large dining space in the Bedford-Stuyvesant part of Brooklyn, as compared to most cramped Caribbean restaurants in Brooklyn. Most have just a few tables, if you are lucky. This area of Bed-Stuy has many fast food establishments. Melanie’s is one of the few restaurants that is not Fried Chicken and Fries, in the area. I was impressed when I walked in, due to the large space and varied selections. Everything from curry goat to grilled chicken, varied vegetable options and different kinds of rice and roti, as well as a huge selection of bakery goods.”

Has anyone else been to Melanie’s? How was your experience?

I stopped going into Melanie’s years ago because of inconsistencies on the menu and for mediocre food.
First off, only Guyanese and Trinadadians know roti, so if the cooks are neither, it won’t be authentic. if you are looking for roti, your best best is to walk down the street to Ali’s, on the same side.
I primarily would go there for smoothies. Before the expansion, they had a big menu, but everytime I went, there was also something missing from one of the blends they offered.
I’d spend 5 minutes or so just reading through all the options, only to finally pick one and have the guy tell me they were out of one of the ingredients. After at least three more unavailable choices, I’d finally break down and ask, “Well, what DO you have?” and would have to settle for whatever he told me.
This happened EVERY TIME I went in.
I’ve been there about five times.
A girl can only take so much.
I have a Vita-Mix now, so I don’t bother.
